What Didn’t Work
Cheap Portable Space Heaters Alone

Match your heating method to how you use the space. Occasional use demands different solutions than daily living areas. A cold basement you visit twice a month doesn’t need a $3,200 mini-split.

I’d skip the HVAC extension completely. The contractor earned an easy $1,900 from me for a solution that physics guaranteed would fail. Research the stack effect before extending ductwork downward.
I’d buy the mini-split sooner. I wasted $600 testing cheap space heaters and infrared units that couldn’t possibly heat 800 square feet. The mini-split worked from day one and keeps working two years later.
Your basement heating method depends on your space, budget, and usage patterns. Stop buying cheap space heaters hoping they’ll suddenly work. They won’t. Seal your rim joists, then choose proper heating equipment sized for your square footage. Your basement can feel as comfortable as any other room in your house once you stop fighting physics and start using methods that actually work.
