Type the length and width of each room and the calculator adds the areas together. It shows the total in square feet or square metres, and also in square yards, which is the unit carpet is often sold in. Leave unused rooms blank.

How to use the square footage calculator
Measure each room wall to wall at its longest and widest points. Enter the numbers as Room 1, Room 2 and so on. If a room is L-shaped, treat it as two rectangles and enter them as separate rooms.
Make sure you use the same unit for length and width. Use the Units menu if you prefer metres.
The formula
Area of one room = length × width. Total = sum of all rooms. To convert, 1 m² is about 10.764 sq ft, and 9 sq ft make one square yard.
Worked example
A living room measures 15 ft by 12 ft, which is 180 sq ft. A bedroom measures 12 ft by 10 ft, which is 120 sq ft. Together they are 300 sq ft, or 33.3 square yards.
What counts as square footage?
For flooring, paint or carpet, square footage means the surface you will cover. That is not the same as the listed size of a home, which follows its own rules for what is included. Use this tool for project measurements rather than comparing listings.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure an irregular room?
Divide it into rectangles, measure each and add them. Triangles can be measured as half a rectangle.
How do I convert square metres to square feet?
Multiply by 10.764. The calculator also shows the other unit for your total.
Should I add extra for waste?
Not here. This tool gives the exact area. Add waste in the calculator for the material you are buying, such as the flooring calculator.
